Jackson Potter is a dynamic New York City–based guitarist and composer whose sound bridges the gap between modern jazz innovation and timeless melodic sensibility. Known for his expressive tone and sophisticated writing, Potter crafts music that speaks equally to the heart and the intellect—captivating audiences and critics alike.

Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, Potter grew up in a family deeply rooted in music. His grandmother, Joyce Paul, was a celebrated Nashville country singer who opened for Elvis Presley and shared stages with legends such as Tony Bennett and Pat Boone. Under the guidance of his father, Potter picked up the guitar at age 10 and quickly emerged as a standout talent, earning recognition in several Midwestern guitar competitions by his early twenties.

In 2016, Potter honed his craft at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, studying jazz guitar under John Hart. His 2021 debut album, Restless (Wise Cat Records), introduced his distinctive voice as both an improviser and composer, earning a spot on RMR’s Top Jazz Album Chart and drawing critical acclaim for its melodic depth and modern edge.

Since moving to New York in 2021, Potter has established himself as an in-demand performer on the city’s vibrant jazz scene, appearing as a bandleader at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center and Smalls Jazz Club. He has toured nationally and internationally as a sideman and collaborated with a diverse range of artists—from vocalist and Olympic swimmer Cody Simpson and Israeli pop star Omer Adam to jazz luminaries Jaleel Shaw, Troy Roberts, and Stacy Dillard.

Potter’s latest release, small things (Shifting Paradigm Records, 2025), features acclaimed saxophonists Jaleel Shaw and Troy Roberts, and further cements his reputation as one of jazz’s most exciting young voices—a forward-thinking artist with a deep respect for the tradition and a bold vision for its future.
